College of Architecture and Urban PlanningThe College of Architecture and Urban Planning was developed from the Department of Architecture, which was founded in 1952 by a merger of the Civil Engineering Department of Tongji University, the architecture departments of St. John's University, Zhijiang University and Hangzhou Arts School, as a result of the nationwide university restructuring in the 1950s. The College has the Department of Architecture, the Department of Urban Planning, the Department of Industrial Design, the Department of Landscape Science and Tourism and several research institutes including the State Laboratory of Modem Technology of Urban Planning and Design, the National Historic and Cultural City Research Center, the Research Institute of Advanced and High Technology of Architecture, the Cross-Strait Urban Planning and Design Research Center, the Architecture and Urban Space Research Institute, and the Science of Landscape Research Institute. Among all its peer colleges in China, the College of Architecture and Urban Planning of Tongji University boasts the most complete range of programs. Currently there are eight Bachelor's programs, six Master's programs and four PhD programs in the College. Its architecture and urban planning post-doctoral mobile station is the first of its kind in China. The college has 1652 undergraduates, including 49 overseas students. There are 588 Master students with 5 overseas students from other countries and from Chinese Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. There are 249 Master students of Engineering and 356 PhD students, 38 of whom are from other countries and from Chinese Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. In the postdoctoral mobile station there are 18 postdoctoral researchers. The College has 244 staff members including 45 full professors, 65 associate professors. Among them 21 professors act as supervisors of doctoral candidates and 72 serve as supervisors of Master's degree students. The College has established extensive links of academic exchange and cooperation with universities and research institutes in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Poland, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, U.K. and USA as well as in Chinese Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. In July 2001 the First World Urban Planning Convention of Institutions of Higher Learning was held at Tongji University, which marked a worldwide recognition of Tongji University as a world class university. |
